As we wrap up the season, we reflect back upon the brackets and how well we did.

We hit on 64 out of 65 teams yet again, missing on Arizona. We chose tyo pass on St. Mary's, Penn State and a litany of other marginally worthy bubble teams in favor of Creighton. Apparently the NCAA Selection Committee yet again favors the concept of not just how well you play in your conference, but also who you play and how well you play against them put of your conference. We may not agree with the selection of Arizona to the field of 65, but we understand it.

We hit on 27 teams in their true seeding. We also hit on 51 of 65 teams within one line of their true seeding (one worse than last season). We were caught off guard with high seedings for Xavier, Syracuse, Utah, Marquette (surprising considering their finish without James), BC, BYU, Siena and Stephen F. Austin. We were a little too high on our seeding for UCLA, Ohio State, LSU, Butler, and Wisconsin.

It has been another enjoyable and taxing season. Now onto one of the most enjoyable four days of the year (only behind Thursday through Saturday of Championship Week).

Well, yet another season regular season is past and it is time to reflect on how well we did projecting the brackets.

We hit on 64/65 teams (missing on Arizona State instead of Oregon).

We felt the Sun Devils deserved a bid in favor of Oregon because of a slightly better win against Xavier in the non-conference and one further win overall. We can't really argue the choice, since we had Oregon as our last team out (instead of Arizona State). Both teams beat Arizona State twice and beat Stanford. Arizona State was apparently left out due to a horrifically bad non-conference schedule (ranked #296 vs. #169 for Oregon). Wea made a choice and we missed. Next year we have to do just a little better.

We also hit on 36 teams seeded correctly (much better than last season's 28 out of 65) and 52 of 65 teams seeded within one line of their true seed (equally as good as last season).

We are happy we improved on our selection percentage over last season (when we only had 62 out of 65 teams). We are also happy we improved hitting on teams seeded exactly (36 in 2008 vs. 28 in 2007).

Bubble wrap 3/11/07

Another season is over, the field of 65 is set, and now comes the time to forgot about the "bubble" and enjoy all the games the NCAA has to offer.

For the record, we had 62 of the 65 teams yet again (projecting Syracuse, Drexel, and Florida State) and missed when Stanford, Old Dominion, and Arkansas were chosen.

We had Arkansas in our early Sunday projection, but dropped the Razorbacks after a disasterous game against Florida (goes to show us once again that how you play often doesn't have much to do with whether you are chosen).

We were torn over Old Dominion vs. Drexel. In the end, we sided with Drexel because of their better non-conference schedule and their excellent non-conference wins. Ultimately, the committee decided that Old Dominion was more deserving for finishing 2 games ahead of Drexel in the CAA standings and beating the Dragons twice head-to-head.

We were left surprised when we saw Stanford chosen and Syracuse left out. The Orange were very light on non-conference wins, had a few bad non-conference losses, a mid-50 RPI, and just 3 top-50 RPI wins. However, the Orange also had 11 Big East wins (including a win over Georgetown).

In the end, we did have a lowly 28 of 65 teams seeded correctly (tied for the top spot with CBS Sportline, the Backboard, and Bracket Watch) , but we also had 52 of 65 within one line of their correct seed (often considered more accurate because teams often have to be moved one seed line to accomodate various tournament requirements), also tied for the top spot with Bracketology 101 and NCAA Bracket predictions. We would like to apologize to all of our readers who have always taken the time to stop by and check out the updates on Bubbleteams.com and the blog.

Unfortunately, due to some MAJOR computer problems and internet connectivity issues, we have been unable to post many of the blogs and/or update the man page if Bubbleteams.com for several months.

However, after much labor and effort, we are hopeful that these issues have been resolved and we look forward to giving you some of the most updated and accurate information on the conference championships starting next week and the selection process for the NCAA Tournament (Selection Sunday is a mere 2 weeks away).

Once again, we hope you will take the time to stop by and check out our information, our links, and our predictions (some of the MOST accurate on the web since our start 3 years ago).

ACC/Big Ten Challenge

It should not be surprising that once again, the Big 10 lost the Big 10/ACC Challenge to the ACC, considering that the "vaunted" Big Ten has NEVER won a challenge (even last year which was considered an up year for the Big 10 and a down year for the ACC).

What is MORE embarrassing is that the Big 10 finished a dismal 3-8 vs. the ACC (with wins coming from Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin). Disappointing games by Illinois, Michigan State and Michigan (once again overhyped) doomed the Big 10 to yet another woeful result. In fact, if it were not for a last second shot victory by Purdue and a narrow one-point win for Northwestern, the Big ten would have had to hang their respective hats on the accomplishments of Wisconsin.

On a side note, the biggest loser in the Big 10/ACC Challenge was the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, who were opted out of the competition, and instead scheduled a road game at Air Force. The Falcons blitzed the Deacs, in what was a blowout victory for the now 7-1 Falcons. Perhaps next year the ACC can get a better challenge from the Mountain West.

We will post our initial recap of the season this weekend, including the top 10 early season upsets for the month of November and the 10 most surprising teams thus far and the 10 most disappointing teams thus far this season.

While the college basketball season does not officially open for another five days, there were some interesting results from the first night of exhibition games for the 2006-07 season.

Maryland 79, California University (PA) 78

Maryland has missed the NCAA Basketball Tournament the past two seasons, posting consecutive 19-13 records and trips to the NIT each season. A return to their former greatness is not only anticipated, but expected in head coach Gary Williams' 17th season at Maryland. With all five returning starters from last season's team, it was more than a little surprising that the Terps struggled with Division II California, a team that finished 17-11 last season. Maryland needed two free throws with less than 5 seconds on the clock to secure a one point victory against the stubborn squad from tiny California, Pennsylvania.

The Terrapins committed 17 turnovers, while playing poor perimeter defense, allowing the Vulcans to shoot better than 40% (13-30) from three-point range. Maryland opened with the games first basket and then proceeded to relinquish the lead for the next five minutes of game time. The Terps opened a none point halftime lead, only to be outscored 44-36 in the second half. Maryland never led by more than four points in the final 8:30.

Louisville 94, Georgetown (KY) 92

The Cardinals are another premiere program that struggled in their exhibition opener after coming off of a disappointing 2005-06 season. Louisville allowed the NAIA Tigers to shoot 49% overall and 40% from beyond the three-point arc. The Cardinals struggled at the free throw line, shooting just 58% for the game. Georgetown fought to take the lead 81-80 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game, to see Louisville immediately retake command of the contest on a layup that put the Cardinals ahead for good.

Michigan State 61, Grand Valley State 57

The Michigan State Spartans outscored the visiting Lakers 51-31 over a span of the late first half and the second half and avoided an embarrassing loss in their exhibition opener. Grand Valley State opened the game with a 26-10 lead and held onto their advantage until 3:41 remained in the game. The Lakers, returning four starters from a team that finished 27-4 last season, looked like a veteran club against the sloppy, lethargic Spartans. One bright spot for Tom Izzo's club was a stellar 18-20 shooting from the foul line.

We did marginally well projecting the Sweet 16 and Final Four this season.

We predicted 10 of the Sweet 16 teams correctly and two of the Final 4 teams (Florida and UCLA). Unfortunately, we thought Texas would be the national champion this season; so while we still have two teams alive in the Final Four, we missed the championship game match after predicting Texas vs. Connecticut in the title game.

We feel the Florida Gators will eventually take this national title, defeating the UCLA Bruins in the championship game.

Xavier #14 seed over Gonzaga (if the Zags do not lose here, they will lose to Indiana in the second round)

NC State #10 seed over California (The Bears have been too inconsistent all season and NC State has faced tougher competition this year)

Seton Hall #10 seed over Wichita State (The Pirates have been an enigma, losing to lower quality teams and beating better quality teams. The Shockers are a better quality team and we like Seton Hall to prevail here)

UAB #9 over Kentucky, NC Wilmington #9 over George Washington, Wisconson #9 over Arizona

Overall we feel we did poorly this year. Despite what many peiple perceive as an odd and unusual bracket by the NCAA Selection Committee, we still strive to do better. We can take solace in being the best (along with Michael Lazarus of Fox Sports and Coop at Bracketamology) at projecting the bracket within one correct seed. That is still not up to our standards and we know we can do better.

Check back during the week for updates, brackets and projections for both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT Tournament (I can already assure you we will be taking Tuesday night off to visit Penn State for an NIT game).

Reflections on the bracket

As the brackets were announced we should have had a clue that things were going to be unusual. Things we noticed immediately were:

California a 7 seed ?
George Washington an 8 seed ?

We know the Colonials did not play a very good schedule this season, but what a snub !!!

As the bracket progressed...

Pitt a 5 seed ? .... seems the Panthers are getting snubbed with low seeds year after year.

San Diego State an 11 seed (we should have seen what was about to come from this one)

Then came the Washington DC region.

We were surprised when Utah State was announced, but we were SHOCKED when we saw Air Force come up !!!!!!

..... and then to see Tennessee as a 2 seed ??

perhaps a few weeks ago, but what have the Volunteers done lately ?? I guess losing three out of your last four (and four out of your last six) doesn't make a difference.

The final region was not a huge surprise, except for Nevada as a 5 seed. We thought we were a bit high with the Wolf Pack as a 6 seed, but as a 5 ??? Seems high.

We can not argue much with the three teams we selected and were left out.
We missed on Cincinnati, Missouri State and Hofstra. We half expected to miss on Hofstra (and include Seton Hall), but to include Utah State and Air Force ??

This is by far the most surprising bracket we have seen in the last 15 years.

Reflections: We only got 62/65 right. We can do much better and next year we will do much better. Despite missing three teams, we still had 30 teams seeded exactly right and we had 57/65 seeded within one line of their true seed.

We missed on the three teams we put in and were excluded
We missed by 2 spots on Pitt
We missed by three spots on California, Tennessee, George Washington and Montana (a 12)?

We are left scratching our heads at some of the selections and some of the seedings, but we can only move forward from here.

We will evaluate the brackets; look at the matchups in the NCAA Tournament and post projections and predictions in the next few days leading up to the first day of the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Tournament Final Bracket 3/12/06

Here is our final bracket for the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

We fluctuated back and forth over whether to include Seton Hall in the bracket or not. In the end, we decided that despite the numerous good wins the Pirates had, their bad losses combined with losing four of their last six games doomed Seton Hall to the NIT. Hofstra was our last team in and Seton Hall was our last team out. We hope everyone has enjoyed the past few weeks of projecting the NCAA Tournament field. We look forward to the next few weeks and as the NCAA Tournament heats up, we will have projections and predictions on the field and the bracket and we will post the entire NCAA Tournament bracket and offer up-to-the-minute updates on every NCAA (and NIT) Tournament game.

Bubble Wrap 3/12/06

The only game of bubble significance is the SEC Championship between Florida and South Carolina. Should the Gamecocks win, one more bubble team would lose their spot.

South Carolina: The Florida Gators do EVERY bubble team a great service by knocking off South Carolina and pushing the Cocks to the NIT. If South Carolina had won, they would have taken a spot from a team already on the bubble and likely considered to be "in".

Florida: The Gators survive a late comeback bid from the Gamecocks. Joakim Noah scored the game-winning basket for Florida South Carolina tied the game with just under a minute remaining. This is the second straight SEC Tournament title for Florida and head coach Billy Donovan.

Duke: The Blue Devils defeat Boston College by two points and put an exclamation mark on their regular season ACC championship with yet another ACC Tournament championship. This marks the seventh ACC Tournament title for Duke in the past 8 years.

Northwestern State: The Demons fight off two Sam Houston State comebacks and hold on to defeat the Bearkats and claim the Southland Championship. Northwestern State erases the bad memories of a loss in last season's tournament final to Southeastern Louisiana.

Kansas: The Jayhawks proved themselves to the nation with a Big 12 Tournament title to go along with their share of the Big 12 regular season title. The Jayhawks came from behind in the second half to overtake the Longhorns and deny Texas their first Big 12 Tournament title.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes used a stifling defense to hold Ohio State to just three points in the final 7:15 in the second half en route to winning their second Big Ten Tournament title.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Update 3/12/06

Here is our latest bracket update. We will post a final update just before the NCAA Selection show.

Teams in BOLD italics have qualified as an automatic bid.

The list of qualified bubble teams that have been omitted from this year's bracket is a short one-Seton Hall, Michigan, Air Force, Maryland, Utah State, Creighton, Wetsern Kentucky. The only teams that we are vexed on is the Seton Hall Pirates. We had them as our last team out and before the day's end, we might put them back in. In studying the bracket, we are finding more teams that deserve to be left out than teams that should be out in. We are uncertain about Hofstra/George Mason and whether 5 teams get in from the Missouri Valley. We are also unimpressed with North Carolina State, Wisconsin, Alabama, Northern Iowa and Arizona. Traditionally the NCAA Selection Committee has been reticent to include teams that have finished poorly, like these teams. Unfortunately, this years seems to have very few teams with which to replace any of these teams that are slumping. We are confident that we have all 65 teams correct, but if we do miss on any one team, we feel it might be Seton Hall. Regardless, we stand by our brackets and look forward to when the selection deadline.

Bubble Wrap 3/11/06

There are eleven automatic bids and a few last bubble spots still up for grabs today. Every bubble team will be intently watching the results from Reno (WAC Championship), Nashville (SEC semifinals), Denver (MWC Championship) and Dallas (Big 12 semifinals). If any of the cinderella teams (Utah State, South Carolina, Wyoming, and Nebraska) should win, there would be a ripple effect on every bubble team with hopes of getting in to the bracket.

Memphis: The Tigers complete their domination of Conference USA with a resounding win in the championship game against 2 seed UAB. Memphis won 16 of 17 games they played this season against Conference USA competition.

Albany: The Great Danes win the America East Conference Tournament and advance to their first NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska and Wake Forest: The Huskers and Deacons both lose giving bubble teams a collective chance to catch their breath. However, trouble does await in........

South Carolina: The Gamecocks continue their improbable run to a SEC Tournament title and a possible spot in the NCAA Tournament. If the Cocks should win just one more game against Florida (a team they defeated twice during the regular season), they would "steal" a bid from a team whose name is already on the board and considered "in" by the NCAA Selection Committee.

UCLA: The Bruins follow up their regular season Pac Ten title with the Pac Ten Tournament title. UCLA is now in line for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Xavier: The Musketeers become the lowest seed to win the Atlantic Ten Tournament on two free throws by Justin Doellman with 5 seconds remaining in the game.

Kent State: The Golden Flashes win their 25th game and advance to their first NCAA Tournament since 2002 with a narrow victory against Toledo in the MAC championship.

Hampton: The Pirates win four games in four days to capture the MEAC Championship. With the win, Hampton avenges a two-point loss in last year's title game to Delaware State.

Southern: The Jaguars win the SWAC Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993 when they upset 4 seed Georgia Tech in the first round.

Syracuse: The Orange complete an improbable run and become the first team to win the Big East Tournament after playing four consecutive days. Syracuse defended their Big East Tournament title from 2005 and in the process became the lowest seeded team to win the Big East Tournament.

Nevada: Every bubble team breathes a HUGE sigh of relief as Nevada holds off Utah State to win the WAC Tournament in overtime. Utah State missed two shots at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Marcellus Kemp hit a HUGE 3 with just under a minute remaining to stretch the lead to four and the Aggies never got closer than 3 points from there.

San Diego State: The Aztecs are yet another tournament champion that save the list of bubble teams from additional worry on Selection Sunday. It was doubtful that San Diego State would have received an at-large bid, but the Aztecs made that a moot point with an exciting overtime win against upset-minded Wyoming.

Pacific: The Tigers withstand an early second half rally from Long Beach State to win their second Big West Tournament in the past three years.

Syracuse: What does an upset of the number 1 team in the country and the top seed in the Big East Tournament get you ?? How about an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Orangemen played their last two games like they want to be invited to the Big Dance and despite a lackluster finish to their regular season; two solid wins in the Big East Tournament should propel them into the NCAA Tournament. The bigger question is.... who do the Orangemen replace ???

George Washington: No, GW is NOT a bubble team, but their loss to Temple in the Atlantic Ten quarterfinals means two teams will be going to the NCAA Tournament from the A-10 and that means one less at-large bid out there for all those hopeful bubble teams. The sense of urgency must be immediate for many at-large teams and now is NOT the time to come out in your conference tournament and play flat.

UAB: The Blazers did what they needed to do today, beat SMU. Now UAB needs to take down the UTEP Miners and make the Conference USA finals. Given the happenings across the college basketball world, UAB needs to take care of business and not give the NCAA Selection Committee a reason to dent them a bid.

Florida State: The Seminoles do not appear to want to make the NCAA Tournament. How else do you explain an opening round loss to the last place team in the ACC after knowing so many other teams have made inroads towards an at-large bid. Florida State might still make it, but only because so many other teams have failed to seal the deal and win the games they needed to make the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan: Add Michigan to the ever-expanding list of bubble teams who have come out and played like an at-large bid is not in their interest. The Wolverines dropped their opening round game of the Big Ten Tournament to a Minnesota squad that the Wolverines dominated in two meetings this year. Michigan is in greater trouble than many other bubble teams because they have lost seven of their last nine games and finished just 8-8 in the Big ten and 18-10 overall.

Colorado: The Buffaloes almost became another bubble casualty, narrowly avoiding an upset to Baylor. Colorado now faces Texas A&M in what might be an elimination game for an at-large bid.

Kentucky: No one will be impressed by the Wildcats win against Mississippi, but at least Kentucky did not lose (like so many other bubble teams). Now Kentucky faces Alabama in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Both teams are felt to be safe for an at-large bid, but with all the happenings across the country, a victory would certainly make either team feel a little safer.

Arizona: The Wildcats won their opening round game without the services of Hassan Adams. Arizona is a safe bet to make the NCAA Tournament, even if they should lose their semifinal game.

Air Force: The Falcons lose in the Mountain West quarterfinals..... again. Air Force entered the Mountain West Championship looking for their first ever tournament win. They exited, yet again, with another loss. This loss will cost the Falcons any further consideration for an at-large bid. A 24-6 record and a second place finish in the Mountain West is a nice season for Air Force, but not enough for a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

California: The Bears did not solidify an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with their win against USC. They did avoid taking a bad loss, which would have probably dropped them from consideration for a bid. California would likely lock up a bid with one more win in the semifinals.

Arkansas: We can finally drop the Razorbacks from the list of "bubble" teams. Arkansas has done everything it can to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Razorbacks can even afford to lose tomorrow and not affect their seeding.

Maryland: The Terrapins are trying to make a late season surge towards the at-large spot Florida State gave away. Maryland needs more than just a win against Boston College to grab an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. If the Terrapins win their next two games, then they would deserve a position in the NCAA Tournament; otherwise, Maryland is just teasing their fans with a few late season wins.

A few bubble teams take the court today with half of the power conferences starting their tournaments. Two automatic bids will be decided by the days end.

Syracuse: The Orangemen pull off a tremendous win against fellow bubble team Cincinnati. The win does not push the Orangemen back into the tournament as an at-large bid, but it does give Syracuse the chance to win their way in against top seed and 1 seed Connecticut. Should Syracuse somehow defeat the #1 Huskies, then their position on the bubble will be reevaluated.

Cincinnati: A tough loss for the Bearcats. This loss hurt Cincinnati more than it helped Syracuse. Cincinnati lost two of their three games against Syracuse, and three of their last four games. Cincinnati is just 4-8 vs the top 50 RPI (a respectable 10-10 vs the top100 RPI) and 5-7 on the road. Yet, the Bearcats have a solid RPI, 18 Division 1 wins, an 8-8 record in the Big East and a strength of schedule that is fourth in the NCAA. The NCAA Selection Committee has always rewarded teams with strong SOS; but somehow it feels like the verdict on whether the Bearcats deserve a bid will depend on the results from games being played elsewhere.

Seton Hall: What is it about being on the bubble in the Big East that leads teams to play uninspired games in their conference tournament when an at-large bid is on the line ? The Pirates lost to Rutgers placing an NCAA Tournament bid in question. Seton hall has left the fate of their tournament chances in the hands of the other bubble teams playing this weekend. The Pirates still have a solid resume, but will that be enough come Selection Sunday ?

Monmouth: The Hawks pulled off a stunning upset of the top seeded Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on their home floor to advance to their fourth NCAA Tournament.

Montana: The Grizzlies win their second straight Big Sky Tournament, this time on the home court of their opponent. Montana dominated Northern Arizona and is looking at either a 14 or 15 seed in the Big Dance.
